Simulation of Co2 Plume in Porous Media: Consideration of Capillarity and Buoyancy Effects

چکیده
IMplicit Pressure Explicit Saturation (IMPES) scheme with treating buoyancy and capillary forces is used to solve the two-phase water-CO2 flow problem. In most of the previous studies of the two-phase flow, the buoyancy force term was ignored; however, in the case of liquidgas systems such as water-CO2, the gravity term is very important to express the buoyancy effect. In this paper, we present three numerical examples to study the CO2 plume in homogeneous, layered, and fractured porous media. In each numerical example, we tested four different models by ignoring both gravity and capillary pressure, considering only gravity, considering only capillary pressure, and considering both gravity and capillary pressure. The cell-centered finite difference (CCFD) method is used to discretize the problem under consideration. Furthermore, we also present the stability analysis of the IMPES scheme. The numerical results demonstrate the effects of the gravity and the capillary pressure on the flow for the four different cases.

Modeling Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Injection in Heterogeneous Porous Media
We investigate the physical processes that occur during the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in liquid-saturated, brine-bearing geologic formations using the numerical simulator TOUGH2. CO2 is injected in a supercritical state that has a much lower density and viscosity than the liquid brine it displaces. In situ, the supercritical CO2 forms a gas-like phase, and also partially dissolves i...
متن کاملInvestigation of Natural Convection in a Vertical Cavity Filled with a Anisotropic Porous Media
In present paper, a numerical analysis for a rectangular cavity filled with a anisotropic porous media has been studied. It is assumed that the horizontal walls are adiabatic and impermeable, while the side walls of the cavity are maintained at constant temperatures and concentrations. The buoyancy force that induced the fluid motion are assumed to be cooperative. In the two extreme cases o...
متن کاملLattice Gas Automata Simulation of Adsorption Process of Polymer in Porous Media
Lattice gas automata (LGA) model is developed to simulate polymer adsorption process by adding some collision rules. The simulation result of the model is matched with batch experiment and compared with accepted isothermal adsorption equations. They show that the model is viable to perform simulation of the polymer adsorption process. The LGA model is then applied for simulating continuous poly...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation and Estimation of the Transvers Macrodispersivity Coefficient of Aqueous Phase (Miscible) Contaminants of Salt Water in a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Porous Media
Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...
متن کاملSimulation of Methane Partial Oxidation in Porous Media Reactor for Hydrogen Production
The enactment of strict laws on reducing pollution and controlling combustion has given rise to the necessity of considering a new approach to energy supply in the future. One such approach is the use of hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen and synthesis gas are typically produced through the partial oxidation of methane in porous media. This process was theoretically simula...
